Rising Global Tensions Mean More Cyber Attacks

Rising Global Conflict Means More Cyber Attacks

With conflicts rising in Iran and the Middle East, you might be asking, “How will this affect my business in Cincinnati?”

Unfortunately, quite a bit.

When problems flare overseas, cybercriminals stay busy. Hackers don’t need to change their tricks. Instead, they ramp up the number of attacks. One spam email a day is annoying, but hundreds pose a much higher threat.

When international conflict intensifies, so do the keyboards of cybercriminals. It is less about new tricks and more about launching familiar ones. These hacking attempts are faster, louder, and more frequent. They tend to be aimed at businesses that aren’t prepared.

Missiles Fly, Malware Follows

History shows a clear trend: when global tensions rise, cyber-attacks go up. Google’s Threat Analysis Group has provided numerous articles about this concern.

These attacks don’t just target government agencies. More and more, small and mid-sized businesses are in the crosshairs. Smaller businesses are easier targets as they are typically less prepared.

Same Threats, More Determined

The tricks hackers use isn’t new, but they (like you) use AI to work faster and smarter. They just need a business with vulnerabilities. Hackers don’t need innovation; they just need an unlocked door or rusting off its hinges.

What You Can (and Should) Do Right Now

Many business leaders operate under the assumption that their company’s cybersecurity is “handled.” They trust their internal IT staff or believe all Managed Service Providers (MSPs) offer the same level of protection. Unfortunately, that assumption can be dangerous.

The truth is that not all providers deliver the same services or the same level of defense. Cybersecurity is not one-size-fits-all. If you’re not sure exactly what tools, software, and more importantly procedures your IT provider uses to for your business, now is the time to ask.

If their response only includes EDR antivirus, SPAM filter, and firewall your business is not secure. A robust cybersecurity strategy requires a layered stack of tools, with each tool serving a different, critical purpose. From endpoint protection and email security to firewalls, backup systems, application allow listing, and advanced threat detection, every layer matters.

On top of the tools your cyber security team should have playbooks to deal with problems when the arise. If you go through a business email compromise, you want a team with experience handling that situation. They should have pre-planned procedures to respond and recover to many common cyber security problems.

Additionally, if they’re offering only a limited set of protections. It’s crucial to consult an expert cybersecurity team now to properly address the gaps. Unfortunately, the technicians who have led you to believe you’re secure are likely not equipped to resolve the issue. If they were enough, you wouldn’t still be at risk.

When the stakes are this high, experts matter.  Would you defend yourself in court or would you want the best attorney you could hire?

Don’t wait for a breach to learn where gaps are in your business. Be proactive. Ask the right questions. Make sure your business has comprehensive protection and not just a false sense of security.
